How Does it Work?

Depression, anxiety and anger are complex problems that may be caused by life events in the past or present, biological factors, or a combination of factors. Regardless of the cause, a solution that seems to work for many people is to live a good life that is not limited by how we feel.  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy work by  changing our relationship with these internal obstacles.

What About Medication?

Using medication is an option that a lot of people take to address concerns about low or anxious mood, and research shows that it can be quite helpful for reducing symptoms such as  repetitive negative thinking. Getting rid of unwanted symptoms is certainly a worthwhile thing to do and there is nothing wrong with doing so.

But ask yourself this question: If all of my symptoms were to magically disappear at this moment, would I have a fulfilling life? Or would I just have one that was symptom-free? Focusing exclusively on getting rid of our painful symptoms can lead us to see life as a problem rather than a gift.

Ultimately it’s a personal choice for you to decide if medication alone accomplishes this objective. I believe that effective counselling for depression (with or without medication) is not just about getting rid of symptoms. It’s also about living the life you want.
