Anger Management

Hot under the collar?

  • Do you have an angry response to common stressors?
  • Do you get hot under the collar because of traffic, disagreements, deadlines?
  • Do you often say and do things that you regret because of anger?

You are not alone

As humans, we have evolved elaborate ways of responding to verified by Psychology Todaythreats to our safety.  Originally, these responses were ways of addressing real physical dangers such as predators. In modern times, most of us fortunately do not experience physical threats to our safety every day. However, we may respond to common triggers as though they were a matter of life and death.  For example, we may respond to being cut off in traffic with a “fight or flight” response that prepares us for physical battle.  Anger management helps us to respond differently to common stressors.

Anger Management versus “Controlling My Anger”

Often, we feel as if our anger is out of control. So it makes sense that more control would be better: “If only I could control the way I feel, everything would be fine!”  But the research tells us that this “white knuckling” type of control is not always the best way forward.  In fact it often makes things worse so that we are caught in a loop of escalating emotion. We probably need a whole new strategy for dealing with anger and other difficult emotions.

Honorably Experiencing Anger and Threat (HEAT)

HEAT is an evidence-based approach to managing anger based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. The HEAT program was created by Megan Foret, Psy.D. and Patricia Eaton, Psy.D. at Kaiser Permanente in Vallejo, CA. I am proud to be offering a version of this program adapted for individual clients. psychologist edmonton

Would you like to have more effective anger management skills?  I offer scientifically-based brief anger management that is proven to help.

But you may still have questions about this….

What if anger management training makes things worse? If you are already angry on a regular basis, it is probably not going to get worse. Deciding not to get help for a problem right now very likely means the problem will become worse in a few months or years. Every time we have to fix up a situation that was caused by the anger, it takes another bite out of life. My training puts you in a position where you can have some control over how you respond to life’s inevitable ups and downs.

Isn’t anger management training expensive?  Anger management is an investment in yourself and your life.  I am committed to making my anger management training affordable for everyone.
